Worked for free
I used to get paid Tsh5,000 (Sh240) per week and would get a salary increment of Tsh5,000 per year. Housemaids were making more money than I did.
Why did you stay for three years?
I needed the experience and I knew this was an opportunity to grow my name and build my CV. I gained a lot that I wouldn’t have got anywhere else. I could produce my own shows and other technical issues.
How were you surviving then?
I was living in a slum called Keko Machungwa for the three years in a house that didn’t have electricity. I would go and iron my clothes at work and sometimes even wash them there.
For most of us bringing your A game to a volunteering job isn’t a know manner. However with a vision, it is something you can do to build trust & familiarize yourself with the work.Using it as a ladder to your desired destination.
Listened to advice
I think having people who that can offer constructive advice is very important . Allow opinions that will surely improve you . Getting acquainted with people in your working niche , will also provide you with people you can share ideas with.
You dont slander or post nudes to get hits, why?
I want to be accountable to the readers and this has really been helpful because people come to my website to confirm if a story is true or not. There are people who will not believe a story is true if I haven’t uploaded it on my site.
I always ensure I get a comment before I post an article on the website. People respect that.
Invest in his career
What is your secret?
Investing in the company. I used to use my last cent to ensure that I covered a story because I knew that if I did not take my blogging seriously, it wouldn’t grow.
That still hasn’t changed, I take some of my writers, and photographers with me to major events like the MAMAs and I pay for their air ticket, accommodation and food. It is not cheap but it is part of the investment.
How many people have you employed?
I have 14.
Is the website making money and how much?
Yes it does. I can’t really say how much but from $10,000 (Sh1 million) a month and above. We have sponsorships, and advertisers. Brands want to be associated with the website from CCM, to Airtel to many others.
You have a lot of followers on social media, over 1.3 million Followers, do you monetise that?
I have to monetise. To post an image on say, my Instagram page (745,000 Followers) goes for $400 (Sh40,000) and a video will be more. It is business at the end of the day.
Don’t you have personal endorsements?
Yes. I have an endorsement from SuperJet, Vodacom and Airtel. It’s about association and I am happy these companies want to be associated with Millard Ayo.
I am speechless.
What are your thoughts on his Rise . Leave that in the comments below.
HERE IS THE EASIEST WAY TO PLAN AND UNDERSTAND YOUR BUSINESS
Business model canvas!! Sounds like nuclear physics doesn’t it?
A business model canvas is a tool used by businesses to project what their business is all about briefly.
In contrast to business plan, a business model canvas is so brief .
At the end of this article, there is a template attached, feel free to use it after you have read this article .
Now remember the way you create a business model canvas is very systematic . We have numbered this template to make it a ride on a steep slope.
1. Customer Segments
( WHO ARE YOU TARGETING) Think of your business, very few ( if there are at all) businesses target everyone. Describe your customer. Who are they? What do they want? What do they like?
How old are they?
( WHAT IS YOUR PRODUCT OFFERING THEM)
Say you are a coffee shop. Coffee is coffee. If I sell mine packed in an ordinary cup and yours is in a instagram worthy cup. We know why millenials would buy from you.
The Unique value is not always tangible.
Sometimes it is a cause. If part of your profit goes to charity, people may use it for that sake.
Now that you know who you are trying to sell to and what is special about your product .How are you going to get to them ?
Instagram? A physical shop? An event?
Depending on what they do, find out the different ways they can access your product.
To gain a customer is one thing . To keep a customer is a whole different entity. There are shops you go to buy something and the way a seller accomodates you, focuses on making sure you leave satisfied and not just selling you a product gets you hooked. These are the shops people go back to and tell all their friends about.
5. Revenue sources
What are your customers going to pay for? These are the different services or goods you can offer. Say you sell clothes , you could also charge for styling advice or makeover. How can your premises generate you money as well? Can your office be rented fr a day or a week or more?
Exhaust the different ways you can access money and find out ways that match your cause. For example safe space doubles as a women platform and a women co working space .
These are the things you need to do . If you are running a website, you need things like hosting, writing, photography etc.. . Include everything you have to do for your business to run and
Determine what you need to get the activities done. Funds? Space? Time? People?
Patnering is the new discount. You do not need to have everything. But you can out source what you have and use it to negotiate.
Patnerships helps cut cost and share audience .
9. Cost structure
Now that you know what you will need to run the business, areas you can find partners in , list the things you will incur cost in.
